At Little Missenden Church of England School our Christian Values are central to our school ethos. Our School Vision 'Rooted and Grounded in Love' (Ephesians 3:17) is the foundations from which our Christian values take root, grow and flourish. 

By sharing the bible stories and verses linked with each value we seek to deepen the spiritual understanding of the value's worth in our lives and encourage each member of our school community to reflect on how we can practically embrace them in our everyday lives.

We believe our values work in a harmonious partnership with our promotion of British Values. We believe these are all shared human values and we use them to develop a safe and secure environment in which our children can learn and grow happily and successfully.

Democracy and the Rule of Law

  • School Council members are voted into office by their peers. All candidates put themselves forward and make a speech before being elected by their peers through a democratic process. The School Council members are trusted by their peers to make decisions on their behalf, after consultation, on a range of issues, such as how to improve our school. For example our children decided the school could be improved through purchasing new playground equipment to enrich their playtime experience. The school council organised a fundraising mufti day event and all proceeds went to providing the playground equipment chosen by the children.
  • Democracy is demonstrated during assemblies where the children take part in debates in order to enable them to express their views and to aid in decision making processes within the school. For example, how they would like to enhance their playtime experience or what would support and enrich their PE curriculum.
  • We have school rules that children abide by. Children are taught the reasons for the rules, the distinction between right and wrong, and are aware of rewards and sanctions related to them in line with the school behaviour policy.
  •  PSHE discussions cover a range of issues including why we need rules, moral issues, and values.

Individual Liberty

  • Our children are given the freedom and responsibility to make their own decisions and to affect the life of the school knowing that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment, for example, during whole school discussions in assemblies and through representation on the School Council. The children also consider other responsibilities such as those encompassing environmental concerns.
  • As a school we educate and provide boundaries for children to help them make safe choices. Children are encouraged to know and understand their rights and responsibilities and personal freedoms and receive advice about how to exercise these safely, for example when learning about E-Safety on the computer.
  • Visits from representatives of authorities such as the police are part of our learning program and help reinforce this message. For example, members of the local community policing team visited us as part of our ‘Beep Beep Day’ to promote the importance of and reasons for the rules regarding wearing cycle helmets.
  • Children’s self-esteem and self-confidence are encouraged by allowing them to make choices, such as what playground equipment they would like to enhance their playtimes and by inviting the children to offer ideas for the design of our new garden area.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

  • We promote respect for all individuals and celebrate diversity and difference. We help children to acquire an understanding of and respect for their own and other cultures and faiths. We also invite visitors, or go to other places of worship, in order to meet others who share their knowledge of their faiths and beliefs with our children in order to enhance our children’s knowledge and understanding. For example, the children have learned about the Hindu Faith looking at music and dance as well as its festivals during 3 visits from Kalpash Zalavadiya. The children have also learned about Judaism and have visited a synagogue.
  • We have links with partner schools in South Africa which help to show children how different communities can be united through sharing common experiences and values.
  • Our children also learn about people with different needs and are encouraged to show compassion and friendship, for example, through exploring the work of various charities.
  • Compassion and friendship is also promoted at school, for example, with playtime mentors and our friendship bench.
  • Our school is inclusive and promotes anti-bullying through promoting the values of compassion and friendship.
  • Our children are encouraged to be part of the local community, for example, delivering gifts to elderly residents in Little Missenden at harvest, taking part in the Little Missenden Festival and the village show as well as by sharing Nativity plays with the local playgroup.
